Are Health Shares a Scam? Here’s the Truth

Health Sharing can sound too good to be true. Here's an honest look at how Knew Health works, what Members can expect, and when Medical Cost Sharing may or may not be the right fit.

If you've spent any time researching alternatives to health insurance, you've probably seen the question:

“Are Health Shares a scam?”

It’s one of the first questions many people have.

When your health and finances are involved, a recommendation from one friend typically isn’t enough.

Healthcare is expensive…

Health insurance can be confusing and costly…

… and then you come across a healthcare alternative that may offer lower monthly costs, help negotiate medical bills, and share in eligible Medical Needs.

At first glance, it can sound too good to be true.

So let's talk about it.

Are Health Shares a scam?

Medical Cost Sharing is a reliable healthcare model that’s been around for decades.

It’s not health insurance, and it doesn't operate like health insurance.

Instead of paying insurance premiums in exchange for a contractual promise to cover claims, Members contribute monthly to a Community that shares in eligible Medical Needs according to established guidelines.

Knew Health operates within that Medical Cost Sharing model.

While there are some compelling advantages to this type of Health Sharing, we also believe you should understand the limitations before you join.

Here are the questions we hear most often…

Is Medical Cost Sharing actually legitimate?

Yes.

Medical Cost Sharing is a recognized healthcare alternative.

It’s
not an insurance policy, and it does not provide the same legally guaranteed payment structure as regulated health insurance.

That's an important distinction – and one we don't try to hide.

Knew Health Members contribute monthly to the Community, and then the Community shares in eligible Medical Needs according to the Membership Guidelines.

Before joining, Members can review:

  • What’s eligible for sharing
  • What isn’t eligible
  • Their Initial Unshareable Amount (IUA)
  • Guidelines around pre-existing conditions
  • Waiting periods and limitations that may apply

The model works best when everyone understands exactly what they're joining.

That's why transparency matters so much.

Health Sharing can be more affordable when compared to health insurance

Is Health Sharing actually cheaper than health insurance?

Yes, because the structure is completely different.

Health insurance is built around premiums, regulated benefits, networks, deductibles, claims, and extensive administrative requirements.

Medical Cost Sharing operates through a Community-based model with defined eligibility guidelines and predictable Member responsibility.

There are also differences in what each model is required to cover.

Medical Cost Sharing isn't required to provide the benefits mandated under the Affordable Care Act, and its guidelines are different from an ACA-compliant health plan.

That allows monthly contributions to be significantly lower, and for us to provide robust Wellness Services and Resources, from yearly well visits to mammograms to free lab work and Health Coaching.

But lower costs don’t mean there's no tradeoff.

It means you're choosing a different structure.

So where do the savings actually come from?

One major source is the cost of care itself.

Knew Health Members are self-pay patients, which means they have access to self-pay pricing that’s typically significantly lower than standard billed rates.

From there, the Knew Health Care Team helps negotiate medical bills.

Our average bill negotiation savings are around 46%, with savings of 90% or more in some cases.

Those savings aren't automatic.

They come from actively advocating for better pricing and working with providers on behalf of Members.

That's part of what the Knew Health Care Team provides for every Member.

Does Knew Health actually share medical bills?

Yes – eligible Medical Needs are shared according to the Membership Guidelines.

Since opening in 2018,
every eligible Medical Need has been shared.

Knew Health's Community has also maintained predictable monthly Membership costs during that time  – prices have not changed.

Eligible Medical Needs are reviewed, negotiated when appropriate, and then shared according to the guidelines.

Members receive their share-out via check or ACH deposit
within days after the eligible Need has been reviewed and processed, and often sooner.

The important word here is
eligible.

Medical Cost Sharing isn't a blank check for every medical expense.

Understanding eligibility before you enroll is one of the most important parts of choosing a Health Sharing Community.

Larger Medical Needs are offset with IUAs

What happens if I have a really big Medical Need?

This is one of the most important questions to ask.

Medical Cost Sharing is designed to help offset the financial weight of unexpected Medical Needs, including surgeries, hospitalizations, and major diagnostics.

With Knew Health, you have a predictable
Initial Unshareable Amount (IUA) for each eligible Medical Need, that you choose upon enrolling.

You are responsible for your IUA, and then the Community shares in your eligible costs beyond that amount.

There's also an important protection for Members:

Your financial responsibility is capped at three IUAs per Membership year.

If you have four or more eligible Medical Needs in the same Membership year, your IUA is waived. You do not have to pay it.

So if an unexpected year brings multiple Medical Needs, your financial responsibility doesn't continue increasing indefinitely.

What about pre-existing conditions?

This is an area where you should absolutely read our guidelines before enrolling.

Medical Cost Sharing communities typically have specific rules around pre-existing conditions, and Knew Health is no exception.

Depending on the condition and circumstances, care may have waiting periods, limitations, or may not be eligible for sharing.

We communicate these guidelines before enrollment so you can understand…

  • What care is shareable
  • When certain care becomes shareable
  • And what limitations may apply

… for your specific situation.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 1 or type 2 diabetes are not considered pre-existing conditions as long as they are controlled through medication and/or lifestyle changes. And if you have an ongoing or complex medical condition, we encourage you to speak with the Care Team before joining.

We'd rather help you determine whether Knew Health is a good fit
before you enroll than have any surprises.

What if I have a chronic illness?

This is another place where we're very transparent.

Medical Cost Sharing is designed to offset the weight of unexpected Medical Needs while providing Wellness Services and Resources throughout the year.

It isn't designed to function like comprehensive healthcare for complex, ongoing, high-frequency chronic conditions.

Some chronic conditions may be shareable, depending on the circumstances and guidelines.

But if you require constant specialist care or ongoing high-cost treatment, a different healthcare option may provide broader structural protections.

That doesn't make one model “better.”

It makes them different.

The right question is whether the structure matches your healthcare needs.

What happens when I actually need care?

This is where the experience can feel very different from what people expect.

Let's say you break a bone while traveling.

First, you receive the care you need.

Then the provider bills you as a self-pay patient.

From there your Care Team helps you understand the bill, negotiate the cost, and determine whether the Medical Need is eligible for sharing.

You're not expected to figure everything out on your own.

Your Care Team will help with provider communication, price estimates, bill reviews, medical advocacy, and negotiation.

Self-pay doesn't mean “you're on your own.”

It means you get much lower rates, a human Care Team, and Wellness Services and Resources to keep you healthy every day.

At Knew Health, we make submitting bills and receipts easy

Isn't Health Sharing a paperwork nightmare?

It can be, depending on the Community.

Some older Health Sharing models require Members to manually track receipts, submit paperwork by email, and repeatedly follow up.

That can be frustrating when you're already dealing with an injury, illness, or hospital stay.

At Knew Health, Members submit bills through their Member Portal and receive step-by-step support from a real, human Care Team.

You're not expected to chase down providers alone or build your own share-out tracker in Excel.

We believe paperwork shouldn't fall entirely on the patient, especially when you're already dealing with a Medical Need.

How long does it take to get share-outs?

Since opening in 2018, the Knew Health Community has shared in every eligible Medical Need within 7-14 business days.

Eligible Medical Needs are shared according to clear guidelines, and Members receive their share-out by check or ACH deposit after review and negotiation.

We communicate expected timelines upfront so you know what to expect.

No guessing.

No wondering whether someone received your paperwork.

No trying to figure out the process by yourself.

What happens if the hospital wants me to pay?

Hospitals typically treat Medical Cost Sharing Members as self-pay patients while bills are being processed.

That means you may receive bills directly from your provider, and in some cases you may need to arrange a temporary payment plan while the bill is being reviewed.

That's not unique to Knew Health – it's a result of operating outside the health insurance system.

The important question is whether you're managing that process alone.

With Knew Health:

  • Bills are reviewed and negotiated
  • Eligible amounts are submitted for sharing
  • Your Care Team helps guide provider communication

Structured self-pay with advocacy is very different from simply being uninsured.

Get support with bill negotiations and self-pay discounts from your providers.

Isn't the self-pay discount just what anyone gets for paying cash?

Sometimes.

Self-pay discounts are common, and Knew Health Members can benefit from them.

But there's another layer.

Our Care Team negotiates bills beyond the initial self-pay or prompt-pay discount, particularly when there's significant room to reduce the billed amount.

Our average bill negotiation savings are around
46%, and savings can reach 90% or more in some cases.

Then, if the Medical Need is eligible, the Community shares in the remaining eligible costs after the Member's Initial Unshareable Amount (IUA).

That's where the combination becomes meaningful:

Self-pay pricing + negotiation + Medical Cost Sharing + Care Team support.

Is this just a loophole around insurance regulation?

No.

Medical Cost Sharing operates completely differently from insurance.

It’s
not an insurance policy, and does not claim to be one.

Instead of operating through insurance premiums and claims, Members contribute monthly and share in eligible Medical Needs within a Community structure.

Because it isn't insurance, it also doesn't carry the same legal guarantees and protections that regulated health insurance does.

That's something prospective Members should understand before joining.

Is this just “black market insurance”?

No.

There's nothing secret or underground about Medical Cost Sharing.

It’s a simple, friendly, affordable healthcare alternative with its own structure, guidelines, and Member responsibilities.

It doesn't guarantee payment in the same way an insurance policy does, and Members should never enroll believing that it does.

That's something prospective Members should understand before joining.

Was Health Sharing originally meant for religious communities?

The first Health Shares were religious organizations that required a statement of faith, commitment to prayer, and church attendance.

Today, there are Medical Cost Sharing models for everyone.

Knew Health is a wellness-first Medical Cost Sharing Community open to individuals who are proactive about their health and committed to the Community.

We welcome people of all faiths and religions – or none at all.

The Community-based idea remains at the heart of the model, but the experience looks very different from the Health Sharing programs you may remember from years ago.

Why do some Reddit posts sound so negative?

Because healthcare is personal.

Someone dealing with a serious illness, chronic condition, unexpected bill, or frustrating administrative experience may have strong feelings about what happened to them.

Some of those experiences may involve Health Sharing organizations other than Knew Health.

You'll find both positive and negative experiences online.

People talk about:

  • Lower monthly costs
  • Successful bill negotiations
  • Medical Needs being shared
  • Frustration around chronic conditions
  • Waiting periods or eligibility limitations

We don't think the answer is to dismiss criticism.

It's to ask more questions.

If you're considering Medical Cost Sharing, find out exactly how the Community handles your health situation before you enroll.

And remember, not all Health Shares operate in the same way.

Knew Health provides a Care Team to help you navigate your healthcare journey.

Will Knew Health leave me alone to figure everything out?

No.

This is one of the biggest differences in the Knew Health experience.

Members have access to a real Care Team that can help navigate the healthcare system.

Your Membership includes:

  • A dedicated Care Team
  • Expert bill negotiation support
  • 24/7 telemedicine
  • 1:1 Health Coaching
  • Wellness Services & Resources
  • An annual Self-Care Credit
  • Knew Options, your second opinion service
  • And much more

Your Care Team helps with price estimates, provider communication, bill reviews, medical advocacy, and understanding what happens next.

Healthcare can be complicated.

Having someone who already knows your name and situation can make it a lot easier to navigate.

What about preventive care?

Medical Cost Sharing is typically associated with major, unexpected Medical Needs.

Knew Health takes a broader approach.

Your Membership includes robust Wellness Services and Resources designed to support your health throughout the year.

That includes:

  • 24/7 no-cost telemedicine
  • Annual well visits and routine screenings
  • No-cost and discounted lab work
  • Two free annual Health Coaching sessions
  • A $200 Self-Care Credit each Membership year
  • 35% off thousands of supplements
  • Members-only discounts through WellzyPerks
  • FitOn digital fitness and wellness classes
  • Live Wellness Sessions with experts
  • Freedom to see any licensed provider you trust
  • Concierge Care Team and expert bill negotiators
  • Knew Options, your second opinion service

The Wellness Services and Resources attract as many Members as the Medical Cost Sharing, if not more.

You're not just thinking about what happens if something goes wrong.

You're getting the resources you need to take better care of yourself now.

Is Medical Cost Sharing better than health insurance?

It depends.

There isn't one healthcare model that's right for everyone.

Knew Health may be a good fit for people who:

  • Are generally healthy
  • Want predictable monthly contributions
  • Prefer a wellness-first approach
  • Are comfortable with self-pay
  • Want freedom to choose their providers
  • Value Community-based sharing and healthcare advocacy

Health insurance may be a better fit for people who:

  • Have severe or complex chronic illness
  • Need extensive ongoing treatment
  • Want highly regulated plan structures
  • Prefer a claims-based model

The goal isn't to convince you to leave the health insurance system.

It's to help you figure out whether there might be a more supportive fit for you.

What about catastrophic insurance?

Catastrophic health insurance is another option worth comparing.

Depending on your circumstances, it may offer protection against certain major healthcare expenses while carrying a relatively low premium and high deductible.

The comparison comes down to structure.

With catastrophic insurance, you're dealing with premiums, a deductible, insurance networks, and the protections of a regulated insurance plan.

With Medical Cost Sharing, you're dealing with monthly contributions, an IUA, eligibility guidelines, provider choice, and Community-based sharing.

Before making a decision, compare:

  • Your monthly cost
  • Your potential out-of-pocket exposure
  • Your eligibility for subsidies
  • Your current health needs
  • Your provider preferences
  • Your comfort with each model's rules and responsibilities

Is staying completely uninsured better?

For most people, being completely uninsured means taking on the entire financial risk yourself.

You negotiate your own bills.

You manage your own provider communication.

You absorb the full cost of your Medical Needs.

Medical Cost Sharing is designed for people who want a middle ground:

Lower monthly costs, structured sharing for eligible Medical Needs, provider choice, and support navigating the healthcare system.

It's still important to understand that Medical Cost Sharing isn't insurance and doesn't provide the same guarantees.

But for someone who’s comfortable with that structure, it can provide a meaningful cost-saving alternative to going without any organized healthcare support
.

Not all Health Shares are created equal.

What if I've had a bad experience with another Health Sharing community?

That's valid.

Not all Health Sharing communities operate the same way.

If you've been disappointed by another program, don't assume every Health Share will work the same way – but don't assume the opposite, either.

Compare the details. Check the published
FAQ's. Or best of all, ask questions.

Ask about:

  • How Medical Needs are submitted
  • How quickly share-outs are processed
  • How bills are negotiated
  • How pre-existing conditions are handled
  • What your IUA would be
  • What is and isn't eligible
  • Who you can contact when you need help

If you have a specific health concern, talk to someone before enrolling.

How do I know whether Knew Health is financially stable?

That’s a reasonable question to ask any organization you're considering joining.

It’s important to look at the organization's history, transparency, structure, and track record.

Since opening in 2018, Knew Health has:
✔ Shared in every eligible Medical Need within 7-14 business days, and more often, within days

✔ Maintained the same predictable monthly Membership costs

✔ Negotiated medical bills down by an average of 46%, and up to 90% or more

✔ Experienced steady Community growth of 44% per year

Medical Cost Sharing depends on Member participation, consistent contributions, responsible guidelines, and a sustainable Community structure.

It's important to understand that Medical Cost Sharing communities do not operate with the same state guarantee funds as insurance companies.

That's another reason informed enrollment matters so much.

So… is Health Sharing a scam?

No.

But it's also not magic.

Medical Cost Sharing is a real healthcare alternative that works differently from health insurance.

It doesn't erase healthcare costs.

It doesn't guarantee that every medical bill will be shared.

And it doesn't provide the same legal protections as an insurance policy.

What it does provide is a different approach to healthcare costs:

  • Lower monthly contributions
  • Self-pay pricing and bill negotiation
  • Sharing for eligible Medical Needs
  • A reachable, human Care Team to help you navigate the process
  • Wellness Services and Resources throughout the year
  • A large Community sharing in each other's eligible Medical Needs

That's not a loophole.

It's a different model.

The most important question isn't “Is Health Sharing a Scam?”

It's:

“Is this model right for me?”

If you're considering Knew Health, don't make the decision based on a Reddit post, a friend's experience, or a marketing claim.

Read the Membership Guidelines.

Talk to a real person before you join.

Ask about your specific health situation.

Find out what's eligible and what's not.

Understand your Initial Unshareable Amount (IUA).

At Knew Health, we look forward to having that conversation with you.

The best healthcare decision isn't the one that sounds the cheapest or the most appealing.

It's the one you understand well enough to feel confident in choosing.

Ask Questions, Check the Member Guidelines and Compare Prices when selecting a health share community.

The Bottom Line

Health Sharing can sound too good to be true because it's unfamiliar.

It's not health insurance.

It doesn't run on premiums, claims, and restricted networks.

It isn't right for everyone, but that doesn't make it a scam.

Knew Health was built around a straightforward idea:
Healthcare can be more affordable, more personal, and easier to navigate when people come together to support each other.

Since opening in 2018, every eligible Medical Need has been shared…

Our monthly Membership costs have remained predictable…

… and our
Care Team has always been available to help Members navigate the complicated parts of healthcare, like finding better prices, understanding bills, and getting the right support when the unexpected hits.

You don't have to take our word for it.

Ask questions.

Read the guidelines.

Look at the numbers.

Then decide whether Knew Health is the right fit for you.
